Understand Website Terminology

You all have heard about websites and their ranking statistics reported by Alexa,Google and various other similar sites. But what is the criteria of ranking these websites ? Some would say its the Hits on the website, the other would stuck on the point of Page views. But what is it which is considered in calculations of web traffic? Today this post will make you familiar with the terms and their importance.

Hits

Hits is also known as request and it’s the total number of files loaded when a single page is requested from the web server. So how hits are calculated? For example – a single web page with 15 images (transparent.gif, header-background.gif, etc)is loaded, that’s 15 hits for starters. The web page has 10 photos (jammie.jpg, group-photo.jpg, etc), that’s another 10 hits. If you add up the CSS files, Javascript files and all the external files, each time a web page is loaded, it can easily build up more than 50 hits. If you clear cache, reload the page, another 50+ hits again.
Hits are rarely used to to judge a website’s traffic nowadays as they are not really accurate. The numbers are big and certainly cool, but generally useless.Measuring traffics in hits usually returns you a proudly large number.

Pageviews

Pageviews is a calculation of how many times a page is viewed. Say a visitor lands on your main page, that’s 1 pageview. Same visitor clicks to About Us page, that’s another pageview. By dividing total pageviews with total unique visitors, you can get an idea how many pageviews each visitor generates.

Impressions

Impression is more or less a marketing term, normally calculated in bulk of 1000. It counts how many times a element (image, text, video) appears on a web page. If a advertisement network is paying $3/CPM (Cost Per Thousand Impressions), that means you are getting paid $3 when the banner appears 1000 times on your web page.

Visits / Unique Visitors

Visits is normally equivalent to unique visitors. Think of it as the number of different people (different IP) that visits your web page. Visits or unique visitors are the most essential numbers of all, when it comes to determine the traffic of a specific site.

The Story of 241543903

Well, don't get surprised or confused about the random numbers. If you're scratching your head to find out what really is it,then I am sure you haven't done the steps given below :

Whoa ! Is that something weird out there ? You see thousands of images with the people putting their head in the freezer.
What sense does it make or what is the magic of this particular number ? Read the post and you'll get to know about everything.

What is 241543903 ?

An image meme that started on Tumblr in early 2009 and spread to social networks around the world has just made its way back to Tumblr, where many users are seeing it for the first time. The meme is called "241543903," and it involves taking a photo of yourself with your head in your freezer and tagging it 241543903. That way, anyone who searches for that magic number on Google Images will see a whole ton of head-in-a-freezer photos. 241543903 seems to have peaked earlier this year, but it's been revived recently by a Tumblr post that now has over 2,000 likes and reblogs.

241543903 is totally weird the first time you see it: some people have Photoshopped their "decapitated" heads into the freezer, while others have taken normal photos by putting the camera inside their iceboxes or setting it up behind them. There are also some 241543903 drawings, and there's even a bit of crossover with the popular "motivational poster" image format.

Below, I'll tell you the story of 241543903, and how it spread around the world and came right back to Tumblr.

The Story of 241543903

The head-in-a-freezer photo meme was started in April 2009 by David Horvitz, a New York artist known for (among other things) starting a subscription service for his daily photos of the sky. At the time, Horvitz was running a Tumblr where he would post instructions to his audience each day. These were generally off-the-wall things like "record a dramatic reading of a YouTube comment fight" or "ask to watch the sunset from the roof of the tallest building near your house." In November of this year, David had a book of these instructions, Everything That Can Happen in a Day, published by Random House.

Taking a photo with your head in the freezer and tagging it with the seemingly random number "241543903" was one of these instructions. Horvitz told us he got the idea after telling a sick friend, Mylinh Nguyen, to try sticking her head in a freezer. The number Horvitz picked was a combination of the serial number of his refrigerator and the barcodes on a bag of edamame and a package of frozen soba noodles he was keeping there.
The first 241543903 photo was posted to Horvitz' Flickr account on April 6, 2009, shortly before he posted the instructions on Tumblr. However, he uploaded a previous head-in-freezershot in April of 2008, well before the 241543903 meme started. This earlier shot was tagged 241543903, but that may have happened after the meme started.Shortly after the first picture was posted, the meme blew up on Google's social network, Orkut, which is one of the most popular websites in Brazil.

I asked David how Brazil caught on to his project before anyone else, and he told me he printed up 100 small fliers about 241543903 and sent them with a friend to Brazil. His friend told him she passed the fliers out to random young people. If the fliers are what caused this image to go viral, 241543903 is a rare case of an internet meme spreading through IRL means.

Once the head-in-a-fridge meme had taken over Orkut in 2009, spread to Japan, and then jumped to Facebook in early 2010, it disappeared until just this week. On Wednesday, a Tumblr post revived the meme and scored over 2,000 likes and reblogs. That's actually more than the 430 likes and reblogs David's original instructions have gathered so far. What's more, the Tumblr post has inspired Facebook status messages about 241543903, leading to a new leap in Google searches for the magic number.

So this picture tell you everything about the history :

Why Facebook still use PHP for the development

Summary: Ever wondered why Facebook is still heavily using PHP instead of just ditching the language at some point in the last eight years? A Facebook engineer recently answered the question.

Here’s an interesting question I found on Quora: “Why hasn’t Facebook migrated away from PHP?” Facebook engineer Yishan Sparklepants Wong worked at the company in various roles between December 2005 and March 2010. Keep in mind that Facebook launched in February 2004 so this particular engineer has been at the company for the majority of its existence.

Without further ado, here’s Wong’s answer to the PHP question:
"
The reason Facebook hasn’t migrated away from PHP is because it has incumbent inertia (it’s what’s there) and Facebook’s engineers have managed to work around many of its flaws through a combination of patches at all levels of the stack and excellent internal discipline via code convention and style - the worst attributes of the language are avoided and coding style is rigidly enforced through a fairly tight culture of code review (failing to adhere to the style and “going cowboy” by writing sloppy code results in pitiless mockery by one’s peers). Engineering management has never had to take a strong hand here; this arose largely due to key internal technical leaders just sort of corralling everyone else along.

There is also a lot of industry precedent indicating that re-writing an entire codebase in another language is usually one of the worst things you can do, so at all levels there is a reluctance to do that. The preferred strategy is to write new components in a de-coupled manner using a better language of choice (C++, python, Erlang, Java, etc); this is easily facilitated by Facebook’s early development of thrift, an efficient multi-language RPC framework. This also helps avoid the worst effects of PHP: it can be totally avoided in subcomponents where the language is grossly-unsuitable. The broad effect is that the overall codebase slowly evolves away from depending as heavily on PHP, with the components that are still in PHP being written in tightly-controlled, disciplined ways by veteran members of the staff."

Facebook doesn’t just use PHP of course (Facebook may release its core C++ library this year), but it is heavily invested in the language.
Facebook uses C++ heavily on its back-end systems. This is for performance reasons, but of course there are drawbacks as well, such as compilation times. If the C++ code is open-sourced, it could be quite useful. After all, Facebook obviously cares more about its back-end than its front-end, which means its C++ code must be pristine, at least when compared to its PHP code

Half A Billion Blog Posts Later, Google To Give Blogger A Revamp

Google’s blogging service Blogger has been used for over half a billion blog posts (with over half a trillion words in total) to date, writes product manager Chang Kim on the Blogger Buzz blog.
Those blog posts have been read by 400 million readers across theglobe, Kim adds. And according to the video below, 75 percent oftraffic comes from outside the United States (the service is availablein 50 languages).
Now the product is getting an overhaul, the biggest change being amore modern user interface for both the editor and the dashboard(fi-na-lly), built with Google Web Toolkit.
Google says it will be showcasing the new design of the Blogger back-end at SXSW (our coverage of the event),as well as a new content discovery feature that lets users find newcontent to read based on the topics of the blog they’re visiting.
The new UI is shown extensively in the video below as well, in case you’re not in Austin.
Of note: Google says it will unveil more fresh Blogger features thisyear – they posit that these are only the ones they’re “allowed to talkabout” at this point.
Let’s call a spade a spade: Blogger has been around for a long time, but has unequivocally been losing mindshare to the likes of Tumblr,WordPress, Posterous and even services like Facebook and Twitter forcontent creation purposes in the past few years.
Its audience is still enormous, though, so it’s nice to see Google hasn’t forgotten its many users around the globe.
We’re looking forward to seeing how the service evolves in the course of this year.

Google Switches to Generic 404 Pages

Google previously was serving pretty useful 404 errorsor pages that are displayed when someone types an incorrect URL in theaddress bar or when the requested page has been removed from Google’sservers.

For instance, in the previous implementation, if someone requested anon-existent page like google.com/email – it will show them links torelated sites, like Gmail, instead of serving a dead-end 404 error.

That has however changed recently and Google now serves generic 404errors that point nowhere. The new design doesn’t even have a searchbox. Beautiful but less-useful.

Chrome Extension Fixes Twitter’s Grammar, Tells Us “Whom” We Should Follow

All is right with the world, as genius (and Googler!) Thomas Steiner has made this beautiful Chrome extension that corrects Twitter’s subject/object discrepancy on its “Who to Follow” feature. Grammar snobs (I KNOW WHO YOU ARE AND WHERE YOU COMMENT), rejoice!
In case anyone’s still confused about ”Who” vs. “Whom” usage, here’s a quick tip to differentiate courtesy of Shit You Should Know:
“To determine proper usage of who/whom, separate thewho/whom clause and pose it as a question.  If that question can beanswered with “he”, use “who”; if it can be answered with “him”, use‘whom’.”
You can change your entire life by downloading the extension here.

The World’s Youngest Self-Made Billionaires!

Billionaires are getting younger! These young billionaires stand out amongst hundreds of billionaires in their age group. They are different from those that inherited their billions, because they started their own businesses and built them from ground up to reach the peak.

Marc Zuckerberg – United States, Age: 23

Facebook has attracted more users than any other site can boast of. The founder is a young boy born on May 14, 1984 and named Mark Elliot Zuckerberg. This sky and reserved kid has an unparalleled brilliance. According to Forbes magazine, Mark Zuckerberg is the youngest billionaire in the world for 2008.

He was born in a Jewish family and his father is a dentist. From his early years, he loved hacking into computers and wrote his own programs. He studied at Harvard, and the idea that brought him fame and money, a social networking site, was born in his dorm at Harvard, and the rest is history. His idea took fruition as Facebook, gaining unprecedented fame. He and his friend Andrew McCollum along with two other roommates, Dustin Moskovits and Chris Hughes started Facebook. Mark is the CEO of Facebook and his net worth is said to be $1.5 billion.

Zuckerberg is the person responsible for the overall direction and product strategy for Facebook. He currently leads the design of Facebook’s service and development of its infrastructure and core technology.

He studied computer science at Harvard University and while he was there, he created a website called Facemash, that compared students’ dorm pictures kept side-by-side, to see which one is better looking (hot or not.) It was about a few months later that he launched Facebook. He also won the Crunchie Award in 2007 for the “Best Startup CEO.”

Xiaofeng Peng – China. Age: 34

Xiaofeng Peng is a self-made billionaire with an estimated worth of $1.5 billion. Solar energy has been his ladder to success and wealth. When Peng was pondering the next move of his career, he realized that renewable energy is the future. Initially, he started out with a trading company in 2005, and it grew immensely to become one of the fastest growing suppliers of Chinese-made solar wafers in the world. These solar wafers are used in solar panels. His company, LDK Solar has also been listed on NASDAQ since 2007.

He graduated from Jiangxi Foreign Trade School in 1993 and went on to earn a diploma in international business from Beijing University Guanghua School of Management as well as an MBA degree in 2002. Prior to founding this company, he also founded Suzhou Liouxin, which is a leading manufacturer of personal protective equipment in Asia.

Xiaofeng Peng is also fluent in Japanese and traveled America and Europe extensively. He is a man with a big vision and has built a company of more than 12,000 people, which continues to grow. As part of his next
phase of expansion plans, LDK Solar has recently given a $220 million contract to Applied Materials Inc., for providing precision wafering systems.

Peng states that he aims at making his company the largest and the most economic silicon wafer supplier in the world and he intends to do that both in terms of market share and sales volume.

John Arnold – United States. Age: 34

John Arnold was a go-getter from a young age. He is on the list of current self-made billionaires and his net work is estimated to be $2.5 bil.

His father was a lawyer and mom was an accountant. He graduated from Vanderbilt University and after his studies, went on to work for Enron.

He was 27 when he used Internet-based trading network to earn $750 million for Enron in 2001, when he was an oil trader for the company. He was rewarded $8 million in bonus. A year later, when Enron collapsed, he went into business himself and founded the hedge fund Centaurus Energy Advisors, LLC, based in Houston, Texas. For this, he is said to have used his $8 million bonus and other funds from selling his Enron stock just before its collapse.

Sameer Gehlaut, India. Age: 34

Sameer Gehlaut whose net worth is calculated at 1.2 bil, is the youngest and the 45th richest in India, and one of the youngest billionaires in the world. He established Indiabulls in 2000. Before completing this degree, he launched Google in 1998, along with his Russian born classmate, Sergey Brin, whose worth is said to be $18.5 billion. There is a small story that makes the rounds, saying that the two friends initially disliked each other until they eventually got closer due to their mutual interests. They even co-authored “The Anatomy of a Large Scale Hypertextual Web Search Engine,” which is like a bestseller in the web world.

Google proved to be an extremely successful venture that has seen an increase in revenue exponentially. At Google, Page holds the title of the President for Products. Since Google went public in 2004, there was a huge increase in business. He is said to make a lot of money from the well-known online advertising program, Google AdSense and Adwords. PlayStation 3 Hacked – Exploit Released

Geohot finally released his exploit so the world could see for itself exactly what the hack does and doesn’t accomplish.

According to the instructions, it involves compiling and running the kernel module and then pulsing a memory bus on the PS3’s motherboard.

“Try this multiple times,” his instructions state. “I rigged an FPGA button to send the pulse. Sometimes it kernel panics, sometimes it lv1 panics, but sometimes you get the exploit!! If the module exits, you are now exploited.”

While the idea is sound, this hack is clearly not for the faint of heart.

From there, PS3 users get full memory access, including ring 0 access from OtherOS, geohot, whose real name is George Hotz, said here. He’s now turning follow-on work to the PS3 community, directing members to report their findings to the psDevWiki.

His instructions conclude: “The PS3 is hacked, its your job to figure out something useful to do with it.”
